"a thrilling encounter between ancient
Ethiopian traditions and the legacy of a modern jazz ensemble, steeped in musical
adventurousness, deep groove, and the spirit of the blues."
Addis Ken (አዲስ ቀን, “New Day”) is the soulful new quartet from renowned Ethio-jazz vocalist and saxophonist Abate Berihun.
A collaborator with giants like Mulatu Astatke and Mahmoud Ahmed, Berihun's project is a spiritual search for heartfelt blues and deep groove. With a new album coming in 2026 on the US label Origin Records, the quartet - featuring pianist Roy Mor (Ubuntu Music), bassist David Michaeli (of the ACT trio SHALOSH), and drummer Nitzan Birnbaum (Shai Maestro) - fuses ancient Ethiopian prayers with a solid groove and the adventurous spirit of a modern jazz ensemble.
“When Abate Berihun opened his mouth and started singing an ancient prayer... I was already floating an inch above my seat. Every sound in this show shoots straight into your soul” - Ben Shalev
